The Carle Illinois College of Medicine continues to build the Global Community Immersion Program for Carle Illinois students, expanding its available locations to include Brazil. Dr. King Li, dean, Dr. Olivia Coiado, medical education facilitator, and Jim Pait, project manager, visited Brazil in November to establish two partnerships for the Global Community Immersion Program. The team visited University of Caxias do Sul (UCS) where they were hosted by the vice-chancellor Dr. Stecanela and Dr. Falavigna a neurosurgeon at UCS. UCS was founded in 1967, and is among the largest universities in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It was built upon a collective effort of the community, and it is still run according to the commitment and engagement of different segments of society who believe in higher education as a source for social development.

The team also visited the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, a scientific institution for research and development in biological sciences located in Rio de Janeiro, and it is considered one of the world’s major public health research institutions. The team had an opportunity to learn about the Fernandes Figueira Institute, the largest Brazilian human milk bank that is integrated with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. This is a pioneering initiative demonstrating how milk can be donated by mothers, categorized according to its nutritional quality, and supplied to premature babies. While at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Dr. Coiado received an award from the Lemann Institute of Brazilian Studies. This award will provide fellowships for up to two students for the Global Community Immersion Program at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. Students may participate in this opportunity during the Discovery Learning period of the curriculum.
