Policy
  • The criteria for assigning final grades will be clearly posted in the syllabus before the beginning of the course or clerkship.
  • The curriculum oversight committee, in consultation with the office of academic affairs, is responsible for maintaining grading guidelines and providing feedback to course or clerkship directors.
  • Students will earn one of three permanent grades during phase 1 courses (except the family medicine clerkship) and electives:
    Satisfactory
    The student’s performance met the minimum standards for the course as defined by the course director and the curriculum oversight committee.
    Unsatisfactory
    The student’s performance did not meet the minimum standards for the course as defined by the course director and the curriculum oversight committee.
    Withdrawal
    A withdrawal from a course can be granted by the office of student affairs, to a student in satisfactory academic standing who is unable to complete the enrolled course due to extenuating circumstance.
  • Students will earn one of four permanent grades for the core clerkships:
    Honors
    The student’s performance must achieve the standards for honors as defined by the course director and the curriculum oversight committee.
    Satisfactory
    The student’s performance must meet the minimum standards for the course as defined by the course director and the curriculum oversight committee.
    Unsatisfactory
    The student’s performance did not meet the minimum standards for the course as defined by the course director and the curriculum oversight committee.
    Withdrawal
    A withdrawal from a course can be granted by the office of student affairs to a student in satisfactory academic standing who is unable to complete the enrolled course due to extenuating circumstance.
  • Student Incomplete Grades
    Incomplete
    A student who did not complete one or more of the final grade components will be granted an incomplete only under the advice of the office of student affairs and office of academic affairs. Consistent with the student code, a grade of Incomplete must be replaced by a permanent grade no later than reading day of the next semester in which the student is registered or it automatically becomes a grade of Unsatisfactory. Reasonable extensions of time are granted by the office of student affairs for justifiable reasons.
