Purpose:

Carle Illinois College of Medicine seeks to comply with the Smoke-Free Campus Act, 110 ILCS 64/1-99, and to provide and maintain a healthy environment that promotes the health, well-being, and safety of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors by minimizing the negative effects of secondhand smoke.

Policy:

Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes and/or the use of all tobacco products is prohibited on all campus property at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and on all property that Carle, Health Alliance Medical Plans, and Stratum Med own or lease.

Processes/Procedures/Guidelines:

As of January 1, 2014, smoking is prohibited on all campus property at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, both indoors and outdoors, and in university-owned vehicles and in privately-owned vehicles parked on campus property. The advertising, sale, or free sampling of tobacco products is also prohibited on campus property. Littering the remains of tobacco products or any other related waste product on campus property is further prohibited. No individual or campus unit subject to this policy may discriminate or retaliate against any person who makes a complaint of a violation of this policy or provides information concerning a violation of this policy. Furthermore, smoking which includes the use of electronic cigarettes and/or all tobacco products will not be allowed on property that Carle, Health Alliance Medical Plans, and Stratum Med own or lease. This includes parking lots and vehicles owned or leased by the organizations. All tobacco use on non-Carle property must be restricted to at least 100 feet from any Carle or Carle-affiliated property entrance and outside boundaries of the medical campus. Cigarette stubs, paper, or smokeless tobacco chew must be disposed of properly and not left on the grounds. Discarded smoking debris will be considered litter and city fines may be imposed.

Individuals found to be noncompliant with these policies will be subject to a system of fines and sanctions.
