Celebrating Culture at CI MED
Carle Illinois College of Medicine students engage in educational opportunities outside the classroom, including understanding the needs of the community and responding to these needs through creating service-based opportunities. CI MED students also foster community through a variety of student interest groups that celebrate culture, heritage, and community.
APAMSA Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration
The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) partnered with the Chinese American Association of Central Illinois in October to reach members of the community with information about APAMSA’s vaccine clinic, voter registration, and healthy eating and healthy lifestyle tips as part of the mid-Autumn festival.
APAMSA Calligraphy Workshop 2025
The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at CI MED hosted a Chinese calligraphy workshop to bring together students to explore the rich history and artistry of traditional Chinese writing during AAPI Heritage Month. Medical student Tony Tu led fellow classmates in learning about the origins of Chinese Hanzi characters and the foundational techniques of calligraphy. The workshop centered around mastering "yung" (永) - a character that demonstrates all eight fundamental strokes of Chinese calligraphy - and "fu" (福), the symbol for luck and good fortune.
Iftar Potluck 2025
CI MED students hosted a celebration of Iftar, the fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims in Ramadan at the time of adhan (call to prayer) of the Maghrib prayer.
SAMoSA Eid Celebration 2025
The South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMoSA) at CI MED hosted an event to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the first of the two main festivals in Islam.
APAMSA Paper Cranes Mural 2024
The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at CI MED hosted a night to make and assemble paper crane murals, which were hung at Carle Foundation Hospital. Folding 1000 cranes is said to help pray for good health for whomever you are folding the cranes for.
Día de los Muertos 2024
Campaña de Salud, a student interest group at CI MED working to bridge gaps in health care access faced by historically underserved populations, celebrated Día de los Muertos - "The Day of the Dead" - a Mexican holiday where families remember and celebrate the lives of deceased loved ones.
Curtis Orchard Apple Picking 2024
The Students with Families student interest group at CI MED hosted apple picking at Curtis Apple Orchard for a day out with their families to enjoy some fun fall activities.
Carle Pride at CU Pride Fest 2024
CI MED students joined several community organizations on Saturday, September 21 for the 2024 Champaign-Urbana Pride Fest in Downtown Urbana, Illinois. CI MED students, led by the Carle Pride student group, provided educational materials and information affirming LGBTQ+ health care in the community as well as opportunities for attendees to have their vitals checked.
APAMSA x CAACI Mid-Autumn Festival and NMDP Tabling 2024
The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at CI MED assisted the Chinese American Association of Central Illinois (CAACI) with setting up and running the Mid-Autumn Festival - a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture - at the Siebel Center for Design. The group also tabled for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).
APAMSA Welcome Week - NMDP Tabling 2024
Members from the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) at CI MED volunteered at Lincoln Square Mall to help gather participants for the National Narrow Donor Program (NMDP) Bone Marrow Drive, which is part of the national APAMSA initiative.
