CI MED Chief AI Officer Named Master Surgeon Educator

Carle Illinois College of Medicine Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Adil H. Haider, MD, MPH, FACS, has been inducted into the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. Induction into this distinguished group recognizes the highest achievements in surgical education as evaluated through stringent peer review. 

Haider was inducted as a full member of the Academy during a ceremony on September 10, in Chicago. The official induction program lists Haider among the Academy’s new members for 2026.

To be selected as a member of the Academy, an individual must be a Fellow of the ACS and a nationally or internationally recognized surgeon educator. Members are also expected to demonstrate leadership, scholarship, innovation, and mentorship in surgical education. 

Haider joined CI MED in 2026 as the college’s inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer. An internationally recognized surgeon-scientist, academic leader and entrepreneur, he leads CI MED’s strategic vision for the development and responsible deployment of AI across medical education, translational research and clinical innovation. 

A trauma and acute care surgeon, Haider previously served for more than six years as dean of Aga Khan University Medical College in Pakistan. Earlier in his career, he was Kessler Director of the Center for Surgery and Public Health, a joint program of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and spent nearly a decade at Johns Hopkins University as a trauma surgeon and director of the Center for Surgical Trials and Outcomes Research. He has also been President of the Association of Academic Surgeons.

The mission of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators is to advance the science and practice of education across surgical specialties while promoting the highest achievements over the course of surgeons’ careers.

Haider is already contributing to that mission through the Academy’s 2026 Symposium, “Innovations in Surgical Education: Training a Workforce for Tomorrow.” He serves on the symposium planning committee alongside CI MED Dean Mark Cohen, MD, FACS, FSSO, MAMSE, who was inducted into the Academy in 2024.

At the September 11 symposium in Chicago, Haider was also a panelist for a discussion on how the surgeon of tomorrow will be trained and chaired a breakout session focused on applications of artificial intelligence in surgical training. The symposium examines the effective and ethical use of AI and other emerging technologies in surgical education and practice.

Haider joins Cohen among CI MED leaders recognized by the Academy for their contributions to surgical education. Cohen was inducted as a Master Surgeon Educator in the Academy’s seventh cohort in 2024.
