Carle Illinois College of Medicine’s most accomplished Physician Innovators are now eligible for election to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. CI MED has been granted a charter to establish a local chapter of AΩA and begin admitting standout students and clinicians from the CI MED community.
AΩA is dedicated to the idea that medical professionals should work to improve care for all. AΩA membership recognizes high educational achievement, honors gifted teaching, and encourages the development of leaders in academia and the community.
Senior Associate Dean for Engagement and AΩA Chapter Councilor Janet Jokela says having a local chapter is an important accomplishment, especially for a young medical school like CI MED.
“AΩA membership is a national honor, recognized by residency programs. Students are asked about this during their residency interviews, and CI MED is proud to celebrate AΩA ideals and attributes,” Jokela said.
More than 4,000 students, residents/fellows, faculty, and alumni are elected to AΩA membership each year, a lifelong honor signifying a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service.
Each year, local AΩA chapters may elect up to 20% of their graduating class. Residents and fellows, faculty members, and alumni who demonstrate the characteristics of excellent physicianship that align with AΩA’s mission and values may also be elected.
Only fully accredited medical schools are granted local AΩA charters. CI MED earned full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2025.
