Carle Illinois College of Medicine graduate Dr. Eric Moran is prioritizing excellence and service to those in need as he prepares to launch into residency in the field of ophthalmology. Moran – an aspiring eye surgeon – is CI MED’s first graduate to match into the sought-after specialty with his selection by West Virginia University Ophthalmology.
“At WVU, I found a supportive culture that emphasizes research and prioritizes service to those in need,” Moran said. “I plan to serve my community by providing meaningful ophthalmologic care to those who need it. It felt like the perfect place to pursue clinical excellence and make a meaningful impact,” Moran said.
Moran’s dedication to service is nothing new. At CI MED, he was active in developing the Avicenna Ophthalmology Clinic, providing basic eye care and screenings for populations that have limited access to care. At WVU, he’ll serve patients from a multi-state region, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, as well as West Virginia.
Moran dedicated a year to research focusing on glaucoma, optic nerve imaging, and computer vision following graduation. At CI MED, he was part of a team that prototyped a wearable device aimed at advancing clinical care for patients receiving dialysis treatment for chronic kidney disease. The team won second place in the 2024 Cozad New Venture Challenge. “I want to continue working on medical technologies that enhance and expand access to health care,” Moran said. “My goal is to bring advanced diagnostics and treatments to patients, ensuring we protect and preserve the vision and health of as many people as possible.”
The WVU Ophthalmology residency begins with a transitional year in internal medicine, followed by a three-year ophthalmology residency. Moran will enter residency in July 2025.
Editor’s note:
Residency matches for ophthalmology are announced earlier than most other medical specialties. Residency Match Day for other medical specialties will take place on March 21, 2025.
