Student feedback is key to continuous quality improvement in all phases of CI MED’s curriculum. We've updated the You Said, We Did section of  this webpage on our public website, to reflect what we have done together to strengthen our Phase 1 programs.

Student tip sheets, survey results, focus group reports and Town Hall presentations are now available on the LCME page on the Intranet. You can also access these items directly through this Box folder.

Watch for big changes in the student lounge spaces at the Carle Forum in March as they undergo an exciting remodel. Upgraded furnishings include a coffee cart, ping-pong table, and more scheduled for the Loud Lounge on March 6-8, and new furniture to be installed in the Quiet Lounge on March 25.

LCME Survey Visit Countdown:  Our limited virtual visit is scheduled for October 28-29, 2024.

Research & Innovation

[cr][lf]<p>New machine learning tools under development by researchers at CI MED and Carle Health could help address disparities in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer in younger women and women of color. The faculty/student research collaboration led by gynecological oncologist Megan Hutchcraft and Ameek Bindra (Class of 2027) leverages technology to identify patterns in patients’ health care visits that could alert doctors of increased risks of endometrial cancer in populations that are often underdiagnosed. The University of Illinois has added to its imaging repertoire a new ultra-high-performance positron emission tomography and X-ray computed tomography scanner, opening new possibilities for cutting-edge research. The new technology is made possible by a collaborative effort between the Beckman Institute’s Molecular Imaging Laboratory and Wawrzyniec Dobrucki to secure support from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. Research groups within and outside of the university are encouraged to use the PET-CT scanner — and other resources in the Molecular Imaging Laboratory — for their research. Interested researchers are encouraged to contact MIL staff for consultation and collaboration. Read details here.

Academic Departments

BMTS :

The Research, Entrepreneurship, Design, and Innovation (REDI) Faculty Mentors program has launched. About a dozen BMTS faculty serve as REDI Faculty Mentors to our students to support participation in REDI activities and to help students network with other mentors in these areas. REDI Faculty Mentors can provide short-term mentorship or develop longer-term mentorship on specific projects with students. Interested students may access this resource.

Two BMTS faculty members – Taher Saif and Kiruba Haran – have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Saif was recognized for characterizing mechanical properties of materials at small scales, with applications in materials science and biology. Haran was honored for high-power density electric and superconducting machinery technology and innovations in aircraft electric propulsion. Induction ceremonies will take place in September 2024. More here.

A new Journal of Bioethics, Technology, and the Medical Humanities will launch in March. CI MED’s Imanni Sheppard serves as the editor-in-chief of the journal, published by the U of I Open Publishing Network. A call for reviewers (unpaid) and submissions will be announced soon.

Margarita Teran-Garcia and a multidisciplinary team have won the Chancellor's Call to Action Initiative Award for their proposal, "Development of SPICE-Healthcare," supporting personalized and inclusive cuisines in health care settings. Their work will build the foundation for a web-based platform to enable clinicians to conduct and provide culturally and medically tailored nutrition assessments and care plans to diverse older adults.

A new doula training program for medical students will launch this summer. The CEE-DOULA Training (Critical Engagement of Equity to improve the health outcomes for African American families) is an intensive program designed to provide medical students with a holistic understanding of the biopsychosocial, socio-medical, and medical variables that negatively impact the health outcomes of pregnant African American women and their babies. Two medical students, two community members, and one faculty member will participate. Students will become certified doulas and have the practical tools needed to help make positive, actionable change to the maternal and infant mortality rates. The program will eventually expand to include other marginalized groups. This program is a collaboration with BIPOC for Better Birth and is funded by the U. of I. Humanities Research Institute. Please contact Imanni Sheppard at iks@illinois.edu for information or future participation opportunities.

Advancement

CI MED and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (OVCIA) have posted an opening for a major gift officer position to secure private support for funding priorities for the college. The Assistant Director/Associate Director/Director/Senior Director of Development will play a critical role in supporting Carle Illinois to maximize overall support and opportunities for collaborative giving.

During FY24 to date, CI MED's Advancement team has reached a donor renewal rate of 45.6%, which exceeds industry standards. Just over 17% of those donors have upgraded their support of CI MED, giving more this year than in previous years. This is in large part due to our communications with and stewardship of these donors.

Carle Illinois Spotlight

Joe Bradley

Health Innovation Professor
Director of Engineering Education & Entrepreneurship

How long have you been with Carle Illinois, and what is your favorite part of your work at CI MED?
I joined Carle Illinois in 2021 as an engineering partner for Family Medicine and moved into the role of director of engineering education & entrepreneurship in May 2023. My favorite part of my work is collaborating with the amazing people at Carle Illinois (students, staff, and faculty) to build this unique vision of an innovation-driven medical school.

What is your top priority in your role overseeing engineering and entrepreneurship education at CI MED?
To ensure that we are creating a supportive environment to cultivate future physician innovators. To support students in exploring their engineering and innovation passion and goals through the curricular content as well as through other student-initiated opportunities.

Tell us about how you first caught the ‘innovator’ bug and how that informs your work at CI MED.
I will probably have to say that I started to see the bigger picture of innovation when one of my professors in a technology management course stated that “consumers don’t buy technology. They buy solutions." The example he used was that “consumers don’t buy ¼ inch drill bits (technology), they buy ¼ inch holes (need for a solution)." This started to reshape my understanding of the value and utility of technology. This is a perspective that I carry with me in my work at CI MED

What are your interests in your time away from work?
Besides hanging out with my family, I am also a drummer with the worship band at my church. I am also getting back into playing piano and organ, something I enjoyed doing as a child.
