Carle Illinois College of Medicine students stepped up to support the primary medical tent at the finish line of the 2022 Chicago Marathon. The world class running event gave the students the opportunity to volunteer alongside health professionals to provide acute care to athletes participating in the rigorous event.
The group was stationed in the main medical tent at the finish line of the race and worked alongside several medical professionals, including physicians, nurses, EMTs, podiatrists, massage therapists and physical therapists.
“I really enjoyed the event primarily for opportunities to connect with sports and family medicine physicians, collaborate with other fields such as massage therapy, physical therapy, podiatrists and learn about and provide acute marathon care,” said Jeffery Lu, second year medical student and lead organizer for the CI MED students. “I also enjoyed following the progress of friends and teachers running the event such as Dr. Carpenter, spending time with my friends and classmates, and being able to witness the women’s marathon American record getting broken, as well as an attempt at breaking the world record.”
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is one of six Abbott World Marathon Majors and had 40,000 runners traverse 29 Chicago neighborhoods on their journey to becoming official marathon finishers in 2022. The event was held Sunday, October 9 in Grant Park in Chicago, IL.
The CI MED student group was led by lead student organizer Jeffery Lu and included Sam Mircoff, Chris Rouillard, Beverly Tomita, Emilie Lemieux, and Pranav Dorbala.
