Transform medical education through team-based, engineering-infused approaches to create compassionate physician-innovators who will improve outcomes across the healthcare continuum: preventive medicine, acute care, chronic disease management, rehabilitative medicine, and end of life care.

Key objectives we will focus on over the next 5 years include

Deliver and continually improve a unique case-driven, problem‐based active learning curriculum built from the ground up, utilizing best practices and effective state-of-the-art technology, focused on the intersection of science, engineering, technology, innovation, and humanistic medicine.

Transform the curriculum to be more flexible
Create curricular tracks( e.g innovation, data science, design-thinking)

Leverage strategic and corporate partnerships to enhance our innovative curriculum, learning opportunities, and other activities across the mission of the college.

Increase corporate/academic partnerships.
Launch and expand MedPrep program with MCB for undergraduate students considering a career in medicine.

Recruit and graduate a cadre and network of diverse, highly specialized students who will meet the college’s educational goals.

Actions:

Develop and deploy a canvas page for career advising.
Develop a career advising curriculum with milestones.
Develop a comprehensive student academic support program that has a curriculum to help ensure student success by increasing structure to existing programs.

Achieve and maintain full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and implement a rigorous self-assessment system to foster continuous quality improvement in student recruitment and education.

Actions:

Achieve full accreditation status from LCME.
Develop and implement a rigorous process for continuous quality improvement(CHI) and monitoring of accreditation standards.

Support and facilitate the growth and development of Carle Health Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs. Retain our students, residents, and fellows or recruit them back.

Actions:

Develop discovery year residency program to provide students who matriculate into Carle GME programs time and resources to continue or initiate research and/or innovation efforts during residency.
Offer Carle Illinois College of Medicine alumni Carle IM residency opportunity to matriculate in an ABIM research track.
Collaborate with Carle Health GME leadership to develop a plan to integrate Carle Illinois College of Medicine curriculum components into Carle GME programs to become a nationally recognized destination for prospective residents.
Create alumni outreach programs to recruit Carle Illinois College of Medicine alumni back to Carle Illinois, Carle Heath and the Champaign-Urbana community following completion of residency training.

Collaborate with Carle Health to grow and develop GME programs and residency programs. Retain our students or recruit them back.

Create optional opportunities to connect with the Carle Health system and providers early in the students experience in order to facilitate future engagements.
Assign each student a "Carle Ambassador" to create connections for individual students to Carle Health resources and mentors.

Implement innovations in simulation, interprofessional team training, and skills development using high-fidelity mixed reality applications.

Design and develop validated XR simulations for training that are integrated in UME curriculum.
Design and develop validated XR simulations for integration within clinical practice.
Grow and diversify the pool of qualified standardized patients(SP) for UME.
Grow and diversify the pool of qualified standardized patients (SP) for clinician training and upskilling.

Grow leadership training opportunities for faculty, residents, and students.

Identify and cultivate donors for a tissue engineering center for research and training.
Focus on individual growth and development of BMTS specialized faculty.
Engage in new multi-center trials from MIXR IUCRC( rural arm at Illinois).
Create community, research park and cross campus collaborations for pilot and scaling.

Implement a strategic faculty recruiting plan.

Assess and restructure the Health Innovation Professor (HIP) Program.
Implement Carle Health and Carle Illinois College of Medicine joint hires program.
Recruit six nationally recognized physician scientists to catalyze and grow our research and clinical programs, centers, and institutes.

Evolve the curriculum towards competency-based advancement and graduation.

Actions:

Develop and implement a robust learner assessment framework and system.
Establish the developmental milestones for each educational objective.
Implement a real-time performance dashboard to track learner achievement.

Develop and expand dual degree programs, post-baccalaureate opportunities, as well as novel delivery and assessment methods.

Actions:

Create additional degree programs within the College of Medicine.
In partnership with other colleges on the UIUC campus, offer dual degree programs such as MD-MBA and MD-MS.
Create a post-baccalaureate program for persons with baccalaureate degrees in engineering who want to pursue medicine.

Apply more of our innovations and solutions to the clinic for safer care and improved outcomes and impact for patients as well as lowering cost burdens to society and health systems.

Implement sponsored program administrative support.

Create more opportunities for students to participate and develop skills in population health and health system science including a development of a new health system leadership elective.

Actions:

Offer a health system leadership elective to MD students.
Offer a full array of topics related to health system science for both MD students and non-MD students.

Advance our quality improvement and patient safety processes using new human factors and systems engineering evaluations to improve efficiency and ergonomics.
